Prior to the Shanghai World Expo 2010, Singapore has participated in two previous expos - 2005 in Aichi, Japan and 2000 in Hanover, Germany. At both of these previous expos, Singapore wowed guests and country representatives with its creative themes and uniquely designed pavilions.
In particular at the Aichi World Expo 2005, Singapore stood out by being the only foreign country featured in the International Herald Tribune in its coverage of the Official Opening Ceremony. Singapore's themed pavilion was also one of the top foreign country pavilions, and one of only six which was toured by Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko. More recognition was to come with the Expo Association rating Singapore's staged national day celebrations as the biggest and the most joyous, among all the countries.
